Decomposing 350 T-shirts, 60 Jeans and 4 leather sofas, the young German brand Benu Berlin has created an interesting eco friendly collection, transforming old and ordinary materials “into expressive textures to demonstrate respect for their production and sources they are made of”. The most produced garments in the world such as t-shirts and jeans, are also the most thrown away. So the question is: is there a way to turn this cycle around? Anna Bach and Karen Jessen propose with their concept “street couture” to “upcycle” the garments and extend the lives of streetwear clothes by transforming them into couture garments with handcraft techniques such as macramé.

“For the Acne Studios Spring/Summer 2013 collection we wanted to be honest in the way we work. Defining elements to the way we design, we outlined three key words. Music, is my background and is incredibly important to me and the team, acting as a major inspiration in our lives. Collage, is very important in our process of design, as we work in an abstract collage way, clashing inspiration and influences. Then New, as we are always striving to explore something new and contemporary. The end result is a clash of romantic sillhouettes, jockey outfits and street style. Fabrics this season are natural with crushed linens, cottons, washed silks and leathers contrasting with nylons, woven stripes and technical double duchesse. Colours range from romantic whites and naturals tostrong colours referencing jockey uniforms, contrasting with a hit of black.”

Daniel Lierah (Mexico) and Arturo Martínez (Spain) are the winners of the 080 Barcelona Fashion prize with this spring collection called Sardonicus. Martinez Lierah work with a limited palette, leaving all the prominence to the structured and geometric pieces that in every garment reveals its naked structure. Their designs strikes me as very European, while at the same time disclose a latin character in their volumes.
The cohesion of the collection may have its root in the confidence of this pair as a team. They know each other very well. After having studied in Barcelona (both studied at the Felicidad Duce School, and Daniel Lierah is a former student of the Master’s Degree in Fashion Design at ELISAVA), Lierah and Martínez continued their studies at the prestigious IFM in Paris where they had the opportunity to collaborate with Louis Vuitton and Sergio Rossi, specializing in shoe design. They also worked for Alexis Mabille and thanks to collaborations with Rick Owens’ sales team, the two designers established their own studio in Paris in 2010 to consolidate their project.
