Mientras parecía que todo el mundo tomaba sol en la península ibérica, nosotros huimos del calor y volamos al norte. En Oslo, en plena semana de la moda, fuimos a visitar la tienda / estudio de la marca Batlak og Selvig. Hablamos con Charlie Selvig, la diseñadora que junto con Admir Batlak son los responsables de una de las marcas mas prometedoras de la ciudad del norte.

El dúo se conoció a los 18 años en Oslo y estuvieron separados algunos años mientras Charlie estudiaba en Central Saint Martins en Londres y Admir en el Istituto Marangoni en Milán. Luego de haber trabajado para Dolce & Gabbana y Proenza Shouler, hace 3 años los antiguos amigos se reúnen otra vez en Oslo, para lanzar la primera colección de su marca. “Creo que el estudiar y trabajar en el extranjero nos influenció para tener un estilo más internacional” nos comentaba.

El local en el nuevo barrio Tjuvholmen parece mas una galería de arte que una tienda. Así sus prendas parecen colgar como una instalación de arte. Pero todo cambia cuando te pones el vestido. Allí el objeto que colgaba inanimado, cobra vida y te viste con maravillosos detalles y estructuradas formas. Mi preferido, un vestido de la próxima colección de primavera / verano de 2010. “Tratatamos la tela para que parezcan que son 3 telas diferentes. Así una seda puede ser rígida, tener textura o simplemente caer depende el tratamiento que le demos. Nos gusta investigar las posibilidades de las telas para crear las formas.” Esta forma de “sorprender” me recordó un poco al caviar de melón de Ferrán Adriá. Investigar, probar y arriesgar para crear algo nuevo siempre desde elementos que ya existen.

Charlar con Charlie Selvig fue realmente inspirador. Definitivamente, una marca que trae nuevos aires al diseño escandinavo.

While it seemed that everyone was enjoying the sun on the Iberian peninsula, we fleed the heat and flew north. In Oslo, during the fashion week, we visited the shop / studio Batlak brand og Selvig. We spoke with Charlie Selvig, who along with designer Admir Batlak are responsible for one of the most promising brands of this northern city.

They met at the age of 18 in Oslo and studied apart for a  few years while Charlie was studying at Central Saint Martins in London and Admir at the Istituto Marangoni in Milan. After having worked for Dolce & Gabbana and Proenza Shouler, three years ago the old friends meet again in Oslo to launch the first collection of its brand. “I think having study and worked abroad, influenced us to take a more international style,” she says.

The shop in the new district Tjuvholmen looks more like an art gallery than a clothing store. So do the clothing, that seem to hang like an art installation. But everything changes when you wear the garment. Then the hanging inanimate objects comes to life and you find yourself with wonderful details and structured forms. My favorite, a dress for next spring / summer 2010. “We treat the fabric to look like they are 3 different fabrics. This silk can be rigid, have texture, or simply fall depending on the treatment we give to it. We like to investigate the possibilities of fabrics to create the shapes.” This element of “surprise” reminded me a little bit of Ferran Adriá’s Melon-Caviar. Researching, testing and taking risks to create something new, always based on elements that already exist.

Talking to Charlie Selvig was really inspiring. Definately, a brand that adds a fresh approach to Scandinavian design.
