One of the things I’ve noticed when receiving mails from fashion students or recent graduates is a certain “amateurish” touch. Sometimes it is in the way the mail is written, other times it’s the way the models are styled, the lighting or the quality of the photos. Having tutored at a fashion school this has made me especially interested in new talent and I find it quite discouraging when it’s impossible for me to see the clothes…because of the poor presentation. Sadly, it is material that I could never publish on El Fashionista.

These works, on the other hand, are the result of Ana Locking‘s course at the CSDMM in Madrid. The idea of the course is interesting: to give form to the student’s own identity and style in a capsule collection, without losing sight of the of the business side of fashion. Other teachers included Juanjo Oliva, Eugenia de La Torriente, Guillermo Espinosa or María Arcas and the results, I think you would agree, are promising.

Una de las cosas que demasiado seguido me encuentro cuando recibo mails de estudiantes de moda o graduados recientes es un cierto toque “amateur”, a veces es en la forma en que el mail está escrito, otras es el estilismo de las modelos, la luz e incluso la calidad de las fotografías. El haber dado clases durante mucho tiempo en una escuela de moda me ha hecho especialmente sensible al nuevo talento y encuentro tremendamente desesperanzador cuando es imposible ver las prendas…por la terrible presentación. Lamentablemente se trata de material que nunca podré publicar en mi blog.

Estos trabajos, por otra parte, son el resultado del curso de Ana Locking en el CSDMM de Madrid. La idea del curso es interesante: plasmar la identidad y estilo del alumno en una colección cápsula sin perder de vista la parte más comercial del negocio de la moda. Otros profesores incluyen los nombres de Juanjo Oliva, Eugenia de La Torriente, Guillermo Espinosa o María Arcas y los resultados, seguro estareís de acuerdo, son prometedores.

To get inspired while constantly being bombarded by ironic and incomprehensive news such as banks in need of more money can seem difficult. But it’s not impossible. Here is an interesting workshop that will take place in Barcelona next July. Imparted by Chicks on Speed (the art collective created by Alex Murray-Leslie & Melissa Logan at the Munich Art Academy in 1997) with the collaboration of the innovator Sabine Seymour (responsible for introducing “Fashionable Technology” at Parsons School of Design) and Alex Posada, researcher and digital creator this workshop is all about textiles and innovation.

The workshop hands on investigation into the notion of sonic fabrics for performance purposes. Through research and experimentation into material, they will try to find the connections between physical materials, in their raw state, and analogue processes combined with ultra-new fabric developments.Leading edge artists, scientists, musicians and fashion designers will meet for 4 days, to take on material and mould it into sonic objects for the body in a performing context.

This is the logical evolution of a research that began a few years ago now. You may remember the  ”E-shoe” by Chicks on Speed, a wireless, high heeled shoe guitar, made in collaboration with Siberian born shoe-designer Max Kibardin and Hangar and that was presented at the Sónar Festival in 2010. Music, technology and fashion! Can’t wait.

Inspirarse mientras estamos bombardeados por noticias tan irónicas como que los bancos necesitan más dinero, puede parecer difícil. Pero no es imposible. Aquí hay un interesante taller  que darán en julio las chicas de Chicks on Speed (el colectivo artístico creado por Alex Murray-Leslie y Melissa Logan en la Academia de Arte de Munich en 1997) con la colaboración de la innovadora Sabine Seymour (responsable de introducir “Tecnología y Moda” en la escuela Parsons) y Alex Posada, investigador y creador digital.

El taller trata de investigar los textiles sonoros con el fin último de la actuación. A través de la investigación y experimentación del material, intentarán buscar las conexiones entre los materiales físicos, en su estado más crudo, y los procesos análogos combinados con los últimos desarrollos textiles. Artistas vanguardistas, científicos, músicos y diseñadores de moda se encontrarán por cuatro días para poner manos en el material y moldearlo en objetos sonores para el cuerpo y en el contexto de la actuación.

Esta parece ser el lógico desarrollo de una investigación que comenzó ya hace un par de años. Quizás recordareís el “E-Shoe“, un zapato de tacón wireless que es a la vez una guitarra, creado por Chicks on Speed con la colaboración del diseñador siberiano Max Kibardin y Hangar, y que fué presentado en el Sónar en el 2010. Música, tecnología y moda! No puedo esperar.
