When I moved to Barcelona ten years ago, one of the things that surprised me the most were all the medieval traditions and festivals. One of them are the”gegants”, (the Dance of the Giants) with twelve foot models dancing. Miriam Ponsa paid hommage to these festivals of the towns of Catalonia, bringing back elements of cultural manners and focusing on the enjoyable face of these celebrations.
Fabrics are padded to symbolise the “human cushion” of the castells with castellers (a “Human Castle”) tradition where hundreds of people balance on each other’s shoulders to create great trembling towers up to nine storeys high. T-shirts are hand-printed and the paper fabric evokes festivals, reminiscent of confetti and streamers.

Cuando me mudé a Barcelona hace ya diez años, una de las cosas que me pareció mas curiosa es la cantidad de tradiciones y festivales que tiene Catalunya. Una de ellas son los “gigantes” (modelos de 4 metros de alto bailando en la playa mayor). Miriam Ponsa decidió hacer un homenaje a estos festivales de los pueblos de Cataluña, trayendo elementos de trajes tradicionales y enfocándose en la parte mas divertida de estas celebraciones.

El tejido de papel representa fiesta, recuerda al confeti y a las serpentinas; se trabaja con rebeldía pintando y dibujando directamente sobre el propio tejido o bordándolo a mano. Las manos estampadas en las camisetas representan los “castellers” (otra tradición que consiste en crear “castillos humanos” de hasta 9 pisos).
