Teresa Helbig es una diseñadora barcelonesa, que ha ganado recientemente el premio a la mejor diseñadora novel por parte de la revista Marie Claire y una semana después, recibía el premio Barcelona es Moda. Su estilo es muy femenino, y trabaja de una manera artesanal, prendas de fiesta y vestidos de novia.

Teresa Helbig is a catalan designer, who recently won two prizes (Marie Claire / Barcelona es moda) for her career. Her couture gowns and wedding dresses are über femenine. Here is the interview.

Antes que todo, felicidades por los premios! Qué se siente haber sido reconocida no sólo por un medio como Marie Claire, sino por una institución, con los Premios Barcelona es Moda?
Y sientes una ilusión bestial. Sobretodo porque nunca trabajas pensando en este tipo de reconocimientos. Casi que no me lo podía creer. Pero fue una experiencia muy gratificante, incluso cuando todo el discurso de agradecimiento se resumió en un escueto “gracias” por los nervios!

Teresa, nos cuentas un poco sobre tu trayectoria, y como llegas a estos galardones? Sé que en tu familia siempre estuviste entre alfileres…
Sí exacto. Pero lo cierto es que yo trabajaba como escaparatista, que era un trabajo que me gustaba mucho. Un día, invitada a una boda, llevé un vestido hecho por mí. Fué sensación, y finalmente me propusieron hacer una línea pequeñita. Hicimos las muestras, eran 8 vestidos, hechos en una tela que tenía mucho polyester, así que picaban un montón, pero los vestidos quedaron muy monos. Total, que se vendieron una cantidad de vestidos, pero al momento de comprar la tela, me equivoqué y compré demás. Así que de repente me encontré con la habitación llena de vestidos y con la pregunta: ¿Y ahora qué hago yo con esto?. Como eran vestidos de noche, que realmente eran muy guapos y ponibles, comencé a usarlos yo misma. Así fué como la gente me preguntaba que de dónde era el vestido y así se empezaron a vender…

Si, si, todo de boca a oreja. Finalmente esta misma tienda en Madrid compró más de esta colección. Y tuvimos la suerte que salieron en un anuncio y a partir de allí, fue colección tras colección, muy de a poco y pasito a paso. Fue todo bastante complicado, pero sabes, la ilusión de lo que estás haciendo y el no pensar demasiado fué lo que fue llevando el proyecto hacia adelante. Diría un poco inconciente!

Viendo las prendas, se ve un poco esta intuición y dejarse llevar por la corriente, con estas formas tan orgánicas y con movimiento…Por ejemplo este vestido azul, la tela parece casi deshacerse con estos volados…

Los vestidos los hacemos uno por uno. Todo el equipo trabaja muy entusiasmado y con ilusión.

Tu trabajo tiene mucho de costura, del hecho a mano…

Es complicado vender más o a gran escala. Nosotros no confeccionamos fuera. Todo está hecho en casa, aquí debajo del showroom tenemos el taller y todo es mas complejo. Los tejidos son de Suiza o italia y los precios se disparan. La producción queda a una escala más pequeña, pero con una clientela muy fiel…

Claro, quien compra una prenda tuya, está comprando un diseño a medida, incluso único, porque estás abierta a hacer pequeños cambios para adaptarlo a la personalidad del cliente…

Se trata de un trabajo súper personalizado. Nosotros trabajaríamos incluso en los colores de los accesorios

(aquí nos interrumpe Buss -Beso en árabe- un perrito que tiene mucho carácter. Mientras vamos hablando, se viene a sentar a mi lado, pero mas bien con intención de quedarse con el sillón para él…:-)

Quería preguntarte un poco sobre tu inspiración. Mientras vamos hablando y viendo tus prendas, diría que hay algo en tu forma de trabajar que te inspira…Pero tienes una musa, una mujer a la que le diseñas en especial?

Si…claro. Hay cosas que me inspiran muchísimo, y que son un hilo conductor, como pueden ser las arañas de cristal, los años ’20, los colores empolvados…Pero cada año, suele ser una mujer detrás. Por ejemplo este año fué Eddie Sedwick. Me inspiró mucho la película, y luego empezamos a investigar más sobre ella, para encontrar sus vestidos de leopardo, los detalles dorados…Normalmente es una ciudad, por ejemplo, Capri en los años 70s. Y que se pondría esta mujer desde que se levanta hasta que se va a una fiesta.

Te quería preguntar sobre cuáles son las ventajas y desventajas de ser una diseñadora, mujer e independiente en Barcelona.

Desventajas. Barcelona puede ser que sea un poco difícil a nivel mediático. Es mi ciudad y me gusta trabajar aquí, pero creo que hace falta mejorar un poco el tema de comunicación. Quizás hay una idea errónea, de porque trabajo a menor escala, hago algo “artístico”. Mi intención es que la mujer se vea guapa gracias a mis prendas. También hay cierta idea de diseñador independiente igual diseñador emergente…en lugar de entender que hay diseño de primera línea y mas maduro, aunque se trabaje a menor escala.

Ser independiente? Ser independiente es lo mejor. El no depender es muy agradable, puedo diseñar lo que realmente desee sin rendir cuentas a nadie. Claro que el crecimiento será siempre menor. Depende todo de tí.

Qué  es lo que mas valoras del diseño en general?

Se trata de un conjunto de cosas…pero básicamente, te diría que lo mas importante para mí es la calidad. Como está cortado, como está cosido…los detalles. Que la mujer quede guapa guapísima.

El amor por la belleza es algo importante en tu trabajo..

Claro…

Teresa, tú  también haces vestidos de novia. Tienes alguna anécdota que nos quieras contar?

Bueno, infinidad, cada boda es un mundo, es un momento muy especial en la vida de una mujer. La última en concretamente fué una experiencia muy especial, de hecho saldrá en Vogue Novias por lo bonita que fué. Era una boda en Ibiza, con muchísimos detalles. La novia para acompañar el ambiente, iba con un vestido impresionante, con tul de seda, 80 metros de tul, nada de líneas…ya lo verás en la revista. Total, que toda la fiesta fué con el vestido y luego a la hora del baile, le quitamos el vestido y debajo llevaba unas braguitas de raso, tipo años ’40, una faldita de raso, con sus iniciales y un corpiño a juego. Super chulo.

No, las historias con las novias son bastante intensas. Piensa que estás muy cerca durante bastante tiempo, así que terminas siendo un poco parte de la experiencia. Al final terminas pensando, “hará buen día, lloverá?” etc… Es muy guay.

Creo que lo que mas me gusta de tu trabajo es lo individual, lo femenino, y a la vez moderno que es.

Nosotros trabajos muy en tendencia también, pero lo mas importante es lo guapa que va a quedar la mujer con nuestras prendas.

Vestido de Novia- Wedding Dress & Teresa Helbig

Pasamos a la zona de novias y me entran ganas de casarme. Vestidos de punto, con broderies hechos a medida por una experta de la casa, mariposas que salen de un tul transparente. Hablamos de lo importante que es que los oficios no se pierdan para no perder estos vestidos llenos de detalles. Miro un vestido que podría tranquilamente llevarse a un concierto con un par de botas o ser lo mas delicado con los accesorios adecuados. Le pregunto por precios, y me cuenta que a partir de 3000 euros se puede tener un vestido a medida.

Estar en el atelier de Teresa Helbig es sumamente agradable. Y sales con la convicción, que en sus manos, saldrás de allí sintiéndote la mujer mas guapa del mundo.

First of all, congratulations for winning the awards! How does it feel to have been recognized not only by Marie Claire, but also from an institution, with Barcelona’s Fashion Awards?
It feels really nice. Especially because while working I never think about this kind of recognition. I almost could not believe it. But it was a very rewarding experience, even when the entire speech was summarized in a brief “thanks” because of my nerves!

Teresa, can you tell us a little about your career, and how to reach these awards? I know that your family were always between pins ...
Yes exactly. But the truth is that I worked as a window dresser, that was a job I liked. One day, invited to a wedding, I wore a lovely dress, made by me. It was a sensation and finally I was proposed to make a tiny line. We made the samples, I remember there were 8 dresses, made in a polyester fabric that itched a lot, but the dresses were really cute. Anyway, I had some sales, but when buying the material, I made a mistake and bought too much fabric!. So suddenly I found the room full of clothes and with the question: “Now what do I do with this?”. As they were evening gowns, quite pretty and wearable, I began to use them myself when I went out. People asked me the brand of the dresses and so slowly I began selling them…

In the style of early Sonia Rykiel … and many other designers
Yes, yes, all by word of mouth. Finally, this same store in Madrid purchased more dresses from this collection and finally one was used in an advertisement. From that time on, it was collection after collection, very small and all done step by step.
It was actually all quite complicated, but you know, being happy with what you’re doing and not thinking too much, was what brought the project forward. I would even say a little unconscious!

Seeing the clothes, one can almost feel this intuition and «go with the flow» attitude you mentions, with these forms and as well an organic movement … For example the blue dress, the almost disintegrates with these…
We make the garments one by one. The whole team are very excited and forward looking.

Your work is couture in a sense.
It is more difficult to sell at a larger scale. We don’t produce in foreign countries. Everything is homemade, here below (she means in the same building) we have the workshop and showroom. Of course everything is more complex. The fabrics are from Switzerland or Italy and prices soar. The production is at a smaller scale, but with a very loyal clientele …

Of course, who buys a piece of yours, is buying a custom design, even unique, because you’re open to making small changes to suit the customer’s personality …
This is a super custom work. We would work even in the colors of the accessories

(here we get interupted by Buss (Kiss in Arabic), a dog with a lot of character. As we speak, he comes to sit beside me, but rather with the intention of keeping the chair for himself …:-)

I wanted to ask you about your inspiration. While we are talking and seeing your clothes, I’d say in some way the way you work, is what inspires you … But do you have a muse?
Yes … of course. There are things that inspire me greatly, and are a common thread, such as crystal chandeliers, the 20s, dusty colors … But each year, usually there is a woman behind. For example this year it was Edie Sedwick. I was greatly inspired by the film, and then we began to investigate a little bit more, her leopard dresses, the golden details … There is usually a city, for example, Capri in the early 70s. What would this woman wear from the moment she gets up in the morning until she goes to a party.

I wanted to ask you about the advantages and disadvantages of being a designer, and independent  in Barcelona.
Disadvantages. Barcelona might be a bit difficult with media. It’s my city and I like working here but I think we need to improve a little the subject of communication. Maybe there’s a misconception that just because I work on a smaller scale, people think I do something arty. My intention is that the woman feels beautiful because of my things.

There is also some idea of independent designer as an emerging designer … instead of understanding that there are first-line designs and more mature designs.
Being independent? Being independent is the best. It is really rewarding. I can design what I want without being accountable to anyone. Clearly the growth is always slower. Everything depends on you.

What do you most value of design in general?
This is a collection of things … but basically, I’d say the most important thing for me is quality. The way the garment is cut, sewn… the details. That the women feel pretty and beautiful.

I find it interesting, because often they are designs that are fun, but for a woman are unflattering because they are too rigid for example…
I think being a woman helps me put me in the skin of the client and think about what I would use to feel pretty.

The love of beauty is something important in your work ..
Sure …

Teresa, you also design wedding dresses. Do you have a story you want to tell us?
Well, an infinity of them, each story is a world of its own because it is a very special moment in the life of a woman.
The latest, particularly, was a very special experience, it will actually be released in Vogue brides.
It was a wedding in Ibiza, with lots of detail. The bride to accompany the atmosphere, was a stunning dress with silk tulle, 80 meters of tulle, no lines … you’ll see it in the magazine. Anyway, the entire party she went with the dress and then when the ball started, we took the dress off and she was wearing satin panties in ’40s style and a satin mini skirt with her initials and a matching bra. Super cool.

All the experiences with brides are quite intense. Think you’re too close for quite some time, so you end up being a little part of the experience. At the end you end up thinking, “How is the weather?” etc … It’s very cool.

I think what I like most about your work is that it is individual, feminine yet modern.
We do work very on trend, but more important for us is to show how beautiful women will be dressed in our clothes.

We went to the area of wedding dresses and I started thinking seriously that I want to get married, just to use one of these beautiful dresses… Knitted dresses with tailored broderies by an expert working inhouse, butterflies emerging from transparent tulle.

We talked about the importance of not loosing these trades in order to still be able to create these dresses full of detail. I check out a dress that could easily be worn to a concert with a pair of boots or be delicate with the right accessories. I ask for prices, and she tells me that from 3000 euros you can have a wedding dress custom and hand made for you.

Being in the studio of Teresa Helbig is very pleasant. And I leave with the conviction that in their hands, you can leave with the feeling that you are the most beautiful woman in the world.
